Abigail invited us out to Birmingham for the weekend. We both were going to go, but I just had some big things I needed to get done this weekend that would really help me over the next few weeks, so Becky headed to Brum. She has ridden the overland trains before, so this was not a big deal. She packed up and we took the train down to Euston station and she headed off.
I found an app called GPSMyCity that gives walking tours you can do around different cities in the world. I did a couple in Oxford and Birmingham in the summer of 2023. I decided to try it out in London. The app actually has 16 different tours in and around the London area. I fired it up and headed off. I ended up not following the app tour as I kept running into amazing architecture, I wanted to see down different streets and beautiful parks to explore, and just some interesting sights. I did use the app to tell me about some of the sites I stumbled onto.
The first truly wonderful place I came across was Tavistock Square. I first noticed it when I saw this sign along the sidewalk. This drew me into the park. I discovered that the park has been used over the centuries to recognize different individuals who have objected to different issues. In this little one block area so many different people have lived and worked. It really has been amazing.
All over the area there was such remarkable architecture covering so many different time periods. I found myself just being led along different roadways and streets and alleys.
I then found my way to the gorgeous building of the Royal Courts of Justice and across the street was the Twinings Tea original store that opened in 1706. After grabbing a Panini I found the Somerset House, The Australia House (was used in the Harry Potter movies), and eventual made it to the Covent Garden’s Market. Where there were several different street performers. Some classical musicians, some folk, some magicians, some cowboy snapping a whip.
I eventually made it back to the Daniel House and settled in for the evening. I found solutions to the assignment problems and tested them with one of the students and had a really good day.
Becky made it safely to Brum and is enjoying her time with Abigial, Jamie, and Mark.
